From the Samkyha philosophy of Hinduism tamas are the lowest of the three gunas, which together are manifest in prakriti (Skt. nature or matter).

Tamas refers to the personality attributes of darkness, slothfulness, grief, fear and laziness.

Tamas does not refer to being sincerely meditative or contemplative, which so many today wrongly write off as instances of laziness.

This is an important distinction, one overlooked on a daily basis in 21C culture. And when you think about it, only God is qualified to say who’s lazy and who’s doing difficult spiritual work, even though the latter may be largely unrecognized by the vast majority of people.
