Feng shui means ‘wind water’ not ‘wind AND water’. There is no ‘and’ in the Chinese sign. Adding ‘and’ to the translation creates a concept where there is division that need to be united with ‘and’. Feng shui is a Taoist concept where heaven (wind) and earth (water) are already one. When you see feng shui translated as ‘wind AND water’ you can be sure that that person doesn’t understand the key principle behind it. It’s fundamental.

Thanks for your comments! I just made the edit and deleted the ‘and’ that was between wind water. However, I’m not convinced that the use of ‘and’ invalidates a person’s understanding. The word ‘and’ has several meanings and thus may be variously interpreted.

Interestingly the former and proper name of Feng Shui is actually “Kan Yu” which translates into “Tao of Heaven and Earth”.
It is a very interesting name as it shows the connection classical Feng Shui make between the physical realm that is Earth and the spiritual realm called Heaven.
The term Kan Yu also refers to the very important concept of the three lucks: Heaven luck (karma and spiritual forces), Human luck (our free will) and Feng Shui (Earth luck) that all interact to create our fate. You can see more on the concept here

So as you see initially Feng Shui is described as a powerful force to shape our lives but in equal measure with karma and free will.
Feng Shui is actually the “common name”. Why Wind Water? Because in the theory of Feng Shui these two forces have opposite effects on the Chi. The wind carries the Chi while water (at least still water) retains it. The Chi is the universal force that we as Feng Shui experts work with and shape to bring more into people lives.
