Death and Resurrection

Death and Resurrection As pointed out by numerous scholars, depth psychologists and writers, this motif is present throughout world religion, mythology and literature.

The death may be symbolic, involving a hero undergoing a psychological or societal ‘death’ by leaving everyday life for the underworld, encountering many strange friends, foes, adventures and battles, only to return utterly transformed.

The theme may take the form of an actual death, as in the accounts of the Hindu Siva and Kali, the Egyptian Isis and Osiris, and the Greek Persephone and Demeter as well as Jesus and Mary.

We also find numerous accounts where archaic societies sacrificed human beings to appease the gods or spirits. It was generally believed that the sacrificial victims would be generously rewarded in the afterlife. Such practices were found in Greece, Rome, India, China, Celtic and Viking Europe as well as Mesoamerica. » Campbell (Joseph), Jung (C. G)
