Gabriel, Peter Pop musician and vocalist who left the progressive rock group Genesis in 1975 to pursue a solo career. His first four solo albums were simply entitled Peter Gabriel, and sold reasonably well with moderate hits like “Solisbury Hill” and “Games Without Frontiers” while the remainder of Genesis (with Phil Collins at vocals) began to produce singles that were popular but regarded by many Gabriel fans as muzak–i.e. schmaltzy music for the masses. Gabriel continued through the 1980’s with increased commercial success with hits like “Shock the Monkey” and “Sledgehammer.” His surname takes after an archangel, who along with Michael, is found in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. In Hebrew Genesis means “In the Beginning” and is the first book of the Bible. » Gabriel
